On this day in 1928, the German Army introduced their own exclusive version of the Enigma machine, an encryption device originally invented by German engineer Arthur Scherbius for commercial markets. The Enigma machine could take plain text and turn it into encoded ciphertext, which could then be decoded by another Enigma machine. Nazi Germany used these machines extensively during World War II to transmit battle plans and other secret information, but the code was eventually deciphered by British codebreakers.
